Boys Basketball: Hedgesville routs Hubs

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. — North Hagerstown’s boys basketball team found itself facing a tough test in its regular-season finale against the Hedgesville Eagles, one which it didn’t come prepared for.

The Hubs never found any footing against the Eagles, trailing for nearly the entire game in a 79-39 loss.

North (12-10) held its ground with Hedgesville in the first quarter, trailing by one at 7-6, but three straight field goals by the Eagles’ Chris Shields put a stop to that. Shields had 10 points in the first period to push Hedgesville (17-5) to a 22-14 advantage.

The Eagles followed that up by starting the second period on a 6-0 run which was curtailed by a Genc Pllana field goal. However, the Hubs didn’t count on Hedgesville’s Q.J. Peterson, who scored 9 of his game-high 22 points to help stretch the Eagles’ lead to 40-26 at halftime. Hedgesville went 17-for-25 from the field with only three turnovers, while North went 12-for-21 with six turnovers and five fouls.

“We’ll leave this (game) here,” said North Hagerstown coach Kevin Hartman. “I just don’t think we played well, which is a credit to Hedgesville. We’ll come to practice ready to work next week.”

The Eagles kept the hot hand in the second half with a near-perfect third quarter, outscoring North 25-5 and stretching the lead to an insurmountable 26 points. Peterson sank three 3-pointers while C.J. Burks and Phillip Largent added four points each as Hedgesville went 9-for-12 from the field and 3-for-4 from the foul line.

North, on the other hand, couldn’t throw the ball into the ocean, going 2-for-14 from the field. Its only points in the quarter came on a 3 by Pllana and a layup by Nick Colvin. Pllana led the Hubs with 14 points and four rebounds, while Colvin added 10 points and four rebounds.

North travels to Rockville Friday for its Class 3A West playoff opener, which Hartman will have his players focusing on.

“There are things we need to do better and we’ll fix them. Hopefully we’re ready Friday,” Hartman said.
