SMITHSBURG — After losing 45-38 at Mountain Ridge on Monday, the Smithsburg girls basketball team hoped to put together a better performance at home against North Hagerstown on Tuesday.

Things didn’t look good early for the Leopards, but they rallied from a 26-6 second-quarter deficit to pull out a 56-45 win over the Hubs in an MVAL Antietam game.

“I am extremely proud of our team,” Smithsburg coach Katy Barnhart said. “I just think intensity and the defensive pressure that we were able to apply were the keys to our comeback win. That intensity helped us to get back into the game. It was a total team effort. We tried to find the open person and then make big shots.”

Senior guard Elisa Owens fired in 16 points for Smithsburg (11-9, 8-6).

“Since it was Senior Night, we wanted to come out of here with a win,” Owens said. “We definitely felt the energy. It was one of the best second halves that we have played all year.”

Danielle Harbaugh had 13 points and seven rebounds, while Alexis Andrukat had 11 points and eight rebounds and Apryl Lee grabbed seven rebounds for the Leopards.

Iman Scott poured in 20 points for North (13-9, 8-6). Crystal McCleod added 11 points and Kayla Peterson had down seven rebounds for the Hubs, who had two starters — Erika Kline and Addison Smith — foul out of the game.

“We blew a 20-point lead,” North coach Cyndi Benjamin said. “I have never seen officiating that poorly. I think the officials let it get way too out of hand. Smithsburg played their game. They made the key shots.”

After reducing the deficit to 30-17 by halftime, the Leopards outscored the Hubs 20-7 in the third quarter to tie the game at 37-37.

The Leopards then outscored the Hubs 19-8 in the fourth quarter.

“It is nice to get a win against a quality team like North going into the playoffs,” Barnhart said. “We are definitely improving and peaking at the right time.”
