Thrift shop plans sale

Meritus Medical Center Auxiliary’s Repeat Performance Thrift Shop will hold a winter clearance sale with 50 percent off all merchandise, starting Tuesday and going through March 10.

Store hours are Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The thrift shop is at 18706 Crestwood Drive in the Crestwood Center behind Dunkin’ Donuts off Pennsylvania Avenue in Hagerstown.

Proceeds will benefit the auxiliary.

Friendship Night

North Hagerstown Lions Club will host its Friendship Night Thursday, March 1, at Always Ron’s on Burhans Boulevard.

Losses for the week totaled 38 1/4 pounds for TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 0077. 

The best TOPS losers were JoAnn M., JoAnn S. and Susie Sword.
The best KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly) losers were Joan Budny, Mary Jo Cunningham and Darla Hartley.

Bea Myers won the ha-ha prize. The no-no snack for the week is soda.

The program included the monthly awards presentations with the following results: 82 members weighed in and 37 had perfect attendance. Honored KOPS for January were Louise Cline, Lu Marletta and Joan Gilbert. Barbara Hall, JoAnn M., Valerie Eccard and Trudy Heather were the top losers for the month.

JoAnn M. had six consecutive weeks of losses and is halfway to her goal. Gilbert and Dottie Alexander were awarded birthday charms. Cunningham and Jean Hart were chosen as shining stars.

The remainder of the program was presented by Alexander, who talked about “Protect Your Heart.” She said 80 percent of women have one or more risk factors for heart disease. The risk can be reduced by 80 percent by eating right, not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight and regular exercise.

Cooking demonstration

A cooking demonstration will be held at Pennsylvania Dutch Market in the Long Meadow Shopping Center Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m.

Seating will begin at 8:30 a.m.

The featured guest chef will be Jeff from the Washington County Playhouse, who will demonstrate cooking ideas to try at home. Jeff will use products available at the market to show how you can create simple, quick meals.

Space is limited and sign-up will be on a first-come basis. Donations will be accepted ($5 minimum) with proceeds  going to CASA women’s shelter.

Those participating will receive 20 percent discount coupons for items featured in the demonstration. Coupons will be good for Saturday only.

TOPS 0446

At the Feb. 15 meeting of TOPS 0446, George was the thinner winner with a loss of 2.0 pounds. Carole came in second, having lost 1.2 pounds. Mary led a review of chapter bylaws, and then presented a short program.

Lisa McCoy, from the Washington County Health Department, will speak about diabetes education at the chapter’s next meeting.
