SMITHSBURG — Phil Rohrer was named Firefighter of the Year and Christopher Quick took Rookie of the Year honors during the annual awards banquet for the Smithsburg Community Volunteer Fire Co. on Feb. 11.

The fire department’s members who came together at the South Mountain Rod and Gun Club also celebrated 80 years of serving the community on a totally volunteer basis, department member Allie Bergh said in an email.

Rohrer was named Firefighter of the Year, the highest award given during the banquet, because he is “always taking on tasks and never says ‘no,’” said Andy Smith, a firefighter with the department.

Rohrer is the father of Chris Rohrer, chief of the department, Smith said.

Smith said Quick has been a member of the department less than a year and already has completed all of his training to achieve the level of Firefighter 1.

Firefighter 1, which requires more than 200 hours of training, is required before a member can ride on a firetruck, Smith said.

The department welcomes new members. Anyone interested in contacting the department may call 301-824-2889.
