Mail Call - Feb. 17

February 17, 2012

“I’ve got a question for all you people who I hear every day are so unhappy with President Obama. Are you planning on voting, the next election? We need to do what we have to do to get him out of there.”

— Sharpsburg

“Well, once again, I see where Canada has signed a deal with China to sell its oil to them instead of the U.S., which meant oil for America, jobs for America — and once again, President Obama, you’ve shown your true colors; political gain over the best interests of the American people. One more reason why on Nov. 6, you’ve got to go.”

— Hagerstown

“I’m calling about the Hagerstown Suns situation. Yes, Municipal Stadium is getting old, and I think there’s an area called Paul Smith Boulevard outside of Funkstown, would be an excellent, excellent area to build a new baseball stadium. So if the commissioners and the city council can come to a conclusion, then I think they should look at this area. And also, you can have fireworks without people complaining. I want you to remember, Funkstown is a great baseball community. So if you want to build there, I’d recommend that.”

— Funkstown

“I noticed gas is going up 10 and 12 cents a day, and if I recall correctly, this is the highest gas has ever been this time of year. And I notice that the Democrat in there for president — I wonder what Mr. Obama is going to do. Is he just going to keep letting it go and go and go? He hasn’t said one word about it. So you folks voted for him. Now our great governor here in Maryland wants to throw another 6 cents tax on top of that. No mercy. That’s your Democrats. Tax, tax, tax.”

“I wish someone would explain how the Hagerstown Suns bring $3 million to the local area. I have my doubts.”

— Hagerstown

“I wanted to let others experiencing delayed mail  — we here are now seeing this, even with bills, so look out — that it’s possible to pay bills by telephone, via electronic transfer, directly from your checking account, at no charge. But I bank with a good community bank, so I don’t know if all banks and companies offer this service free, or even at all, so check this before you do it. But it sure saves a lot of worry, plus the cost of postage and checks, and you don’t need a computer, either.”

— Frederick, Md.

“They’re going to borrow money for the new recycle containers, and they’re going to take back the old recycle containers. Question is, what are they doing with the old recycle containers? Are they getting any money for them, are they going to the landfill, are they going to recycle them, or what?”

— Hagerstown

“This is in reference to the letter to the editor on A4 on Saturday the 11th, about ‘Suns have overstayed their welcome.’ I completely support Wallace McClure’s analysis of it. Also, use common sense, the Hagerstown city government, state officials and Washington County; $18 million to build a new stadium here, buy more land, and everything else? We have touched teachers’ pensions and everything else. We don’t need any more new debt.”

— Leitersburg

“Hey, Simmers for county commissioner, you need to take your sign down off of the building at the corner of Baltimore Street and Summit Avenue.”

— Hagerstown

“For what it’s worth, I cannot believe that the incompetent ... we have in positions of power in this community would actually put a baseball stadium literally on top of two seniors and disabled towers.”

— Hagerstown
