Iris Alfreda Coffman Sharpes, 84, of 8507 Mapleville Road, Boonsboro, died Monday, Feb. 13, 2012, at Fahrney-Keedy Home and Village.

Born March 25, 1927, in Hagerstown, she was a daughter of the late Ira S. and Alfreda Elizabeth Wallace Coffman.

She was a graduate of Juniata College in 1947, and received a Master of Education degree from the University of Maryland in 1966.

She was employed by the Washington County Public Schools, teaching at Williamsport Elementary School and for 30 years at Lincolnshire Elementary School. From 1954 to 1958, she was a secretary to the president of Wilson College, Chambersburg, Pa.

Mrs. Sharpes was a member of Hagerstown Church of the Brethren, and served in various capacities over the years. She was also treasurer of the Fahrney-Keedy Auxiliary, and a member of the Maryland State Retired Teachers Association, the Washington County Retired Teachers Association and the Washington County Historical Society.


Surviving is her husband, Lowell V. Sharpes Jr., whom she married in January 2001; two stepsons, Douglas Allen Sharpes and wife, Marilyn, of Thurmont, Md., and Robert Dale Sharpes and wife, Bonnie, of Broadway, Va.; as well as her sister, Joyce M. Coffman of Boonsboro; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepson, Lowell V. Sharpes III.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 17, at the Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown. The Revs. Louis L. Emerick and Loyal H. Vanderveer will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.
