Today is “Susan B. Anthony Day.”  Susan Brownell Anthony (Feb 15, 1820, to March 13, 1906) was a prominent American civil rights leader who played a pivotal role in the 19th century women’s rights movement.

Although she never lived to see it, Anthony was instrumental in the passage of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote.

Winter Street School recognizes students

The following students have been chosen by their teachers as Classroom Citizens for the month of January:

Amasia Blakney, Loralei Lawler, Elijah Blakney, Conner Billman, Paris Randall, Anthony Blakney, Ellis Simpkins, Peyton Stotelmyer, Elijah Brown, Willow Shank and Seravina Brown.

The Classroom Citizens are chosen based on their attitude toward learning, respect, responsibility, attendance, homework completion and exhibiting good “Character Counts!” traits.

Winter Street Elementary to hold McTeacher Night

Winter Street Elementary School will hold family night Tuesday, Feb. 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the McDonald’s restaurant on Dual Highway.

A portion of the proceeds from the food sold will be donated to Winter Street Elementary. Parents, friends and neighbors are invited. The more McDonald’s food the teachers sell while working, the more money the school will raise.

Winter Street names Athletes of the Month

Winter Street Elementary School named its February star athletes of the month for grades prekindergarten through five.

The students are Johnathan Thompson, Evelynn McDonald, Cadence Lowery, Garrett Crawford, Butchie Sisler, Jose Rodriguez and Paris Randall.

The students chosen have great abilities in all physical education activities.

These students always try their best, have a good attitude and always show good sportsmanship to others.

Chloe Wittington gains monthly honor

Winter Street Elementary School student Chloe Wittington was awarded the “Character Counts!” honor for the month for January.
 
Chloe’s second-grade teacher Chelsea Goebel nominated her because she is an extremely responsible and trustworthy student who is very helpful and can always be counted on to set a good example for others.

Chloe’s accomplishments include being a member of her school’s “Bee-A-Reader” program and winner of The Herald-Mail Scavenger Hunt contest.

Chloe was also invited to last year’s National Tree Lighting Ceremony in Washington, D.C., where she shook hands with President Obama. 

West End Lions Club scholarships available

High school students who live in Hagerstown’s West End are eligible for college scholarships from the West Hagerstown Lions Club.

The applications are available at the guidance offices of North Hagerstown High School, South Hagerstown High School and Washington County Technical High School.

The deadline for submission is April 15.

Lions Club donates to war memorial

At a recent West Hagerstown Lions Club meeting, Wayne Winebrenner and Jim Mobley presented information about the Korean War Veterans Memorial to be built in Hagerstown.
 
After hearing the presentation. the club voted to contribute to the building fund.
