Mail Call - Feb. 14

February 13, 2012

“Way to go, Mr. Murray and your county commissioners. Punish recyclers with fees and/or inconvenience. Reward those who have no problem loading up the landfill with valuable resources. Are you saving our tax dollars for the next cell in the landfill? Or maybe to continue funding the ‘airport’? What do we stand up for in this county? I believe I smell garbage.”
— Washington County

“Today’s Smithsburg caller assumes that our local officials never met with officials from Frederick. Frederick’s improvements didn’t happen overnight, and the elected officials were initially punished for their vision, by spending some time out of office. Fortunately, Ron Young is back, representing good ideas, and he has been here. Let’s give his new ideas a chance. A new library is on the way. Could a new stadium multi-use venue downtown be the right investment? Certainly would make downtown a destination again.”
— Hagerstown

“Concerning the baseball stadium, someone said the Hagerstown Suns bring about $3 million into the county and city. Who are they kidding? That’s so hard to believe. I don’t even think they bring $1 million in. I think maybe a couple hundred thousand. Exactly where did they get those numbers from? Please explain, and be exact, because I am not believing it.”
— Hagerstown

“Sharpsburg caller, your call about George Bush’s policies is a joke. His policy was to go to war in Iraq and Afghanistan. He had no policy to go get Osama bin Laden. He said he wasn’t even worried about him, in an interview. Also, about hostages, he let them kill that reporter in Pakistan. He didn’t send any SEALs to get them. So George Bush never did anything like this. This is all President Obama’s policies. Secondly, all you people all the time, you conservatives complain ... constantly about spending money, but you keep wanting to give money to the military, over and over and over again, even when there’s not that big of a threat, to house and feed all these people.”
— Hagerstown

“My question to Gov. O’Malley would be: ‘When do you stop bleeding middle-class Marylanders? This is now one of the most expensive states to live in. What happens as you push more fixed-incomed individuals ever closer to poverty? I recycle, reuse and fix everything. I garden, can and freeze, shop with coupons, and only drive when necessary. I’m retired, and thank God, no longer commute 250-plus miles a week. What will driving up the sales tax do to relieve the unchecked spending? I ran $1 million department. You spend and live within your means, not above. Increase legitimate revenues to fund budgets and service is understandable and agreeable. Earmarked moneys need to go for what they are intended. Robbing Peter to pay Paul doesn’t work. I for one am tired of the inefficiency.’”
— Washington County

“My idea on this recycle, which I did try and I can’t do it — I’m 70 years old, I can’t lift the stuff — number one, the grocery stores, if they want me to buy from them, at least recycle ... something or another out front that I can even, get back, if I want a piece of meat. Meat at my age — no way. But I’m saying let them put the recycle things in front of their stores. I will go shop there and then I’ll bring back in paper, could let me recycle at the newspaper office, instead of trying to worry in front of my place.”
— Hagerstown

“This is to the town of Sharpsburg, Boonsboro and Keedysville. We’d like to see an expense sheet in The Herald-Mail newspaper on what you spend in fiscal year 2012. That way, maybe the southern Washington County could probably figure why we don’t have any roads down here, which we already know, with the new battlefield road and all the expenses done in Boonsboro and Keedysville. OK, this is just calling in to Mail Call, wondering where our roads are.”
— Washington County

“As both a city and county taxpayer in Washington County, I would suggest that our government officials first check with the taxpayers before undertaking any long-term government ... funding any new baseball facility that will affect our tax base for years to come. As we have seen in other areas, even after a new facility has been built, there is no guarantee the team will stay. ... Our tax base cannot support a new facility.”
— Hagerstown

“In response to the person who stated she pays in to Medicare for health insurance, because she was working, you don’t have to be working. My Social Security is low, and I had to go on food stamps. I’m in my 70s and worked all my life, until 2007. Now I have to be embarrassed and use food stamps. So be glad you have a job.”
— Williamsport

“Well, I see where President Obama has said that he thinks he deserves a second term. Well, Mr. President, as an American, I don’t think you deserve another one. I think your policies have failed, I think you’re an incompetent president, and the people of this country need to open their eye to your left-wing, radical policies. You need to go.”
— Hagerstown

“Who knows more about city and county operations than city and county employees? Yet these governments keep hiring consultants; expensive consultants. We should remember what a consultant is. That’s a person who borrows your watch, then tells you what time it is.”
— Fountain Head

“It’s time for the city to get out of the real estate business, the golf course business, the baseball business and all the other white elephants, and stop subsidizing all these places and people and what have you, so our taxes rate can go down.”
— Hagerstown

“If one is to really read the Bible with an open mind, as it pertains to homosexuality, one would find the relationship between King David and Jonathan quite interesting. They were as gay as an Easter bonnet on the Fourth of July. So go ahead and read that Bible. It is the unerring word of God, after all.”
— Falling Waters, W.Va.

“I was reading this morning’s paper, and I thought President Obama moved up here, moved into Washington County, Md., all the money they’re going to borrow and spend, and they took and, I lost $50,000 value on my house. I asked for a tax cut, and they cut it $7-and-20-some cents. So I believe Obama and his crew’s taking over Washington County, the way they spend money. And I’m glad to see that they’re going out of the real estate business. They aren’t making any money on all those houses they bought and fixed up and can’t sell, that’s on TV, you see the houses for sale.”
— Hagerstown

“You conservatives in this county really, really are crazy. All you do is blame President Obama for everything. You say he appeases his enemies. He doesn’t appease his enemies. He killed bin Laden, he increased troops in Afghanistan, he got rid of Gadhafi. So I don’t know what else he can do. You say he cut aircraft carriers. Well, we’re broke. We have to cut some military, whether you like it or not. China will not attack us as long as you keep buying their junk. Also, lastly, you keep saying that he increased health care. Health care increases every year, and it has for the last 10 years, on my insurance at work, even before Obama even came on the scene. You people are just crazy.”
— Hagerstown

“To the caller back on the 3rd who said we should keep our military on the payroll when they return: Do they think they only get paid during war, when they’re in battle? I do believe it is a regular job, and people retire from it.”
— Clear Spring

“Our county commissioners are dumb as a box of rocks. They spend 15 years trying to get people to recycle, and then they decide they’re going to charge them $35 a year to do it. Why in the world would I buy a permit, when I can just throw all those recyclables in the trash, at the other permit, and forget about it?”
— Dargan area

“I for one am sick and tired of hearing single mothers complain about their children, not having any money, and that ex-husband or boyfriend who will not support them. Think before you do the things you do.”
— Hagerstown
