Donald E. "Donnie" DeBold Sr., 88, of National Pike, Hagerstown, passed away Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, at his home.

Born Sept. 11, 1923, in Eylers Valley, Md. (Sabillasville), he was the son of the late William John “Billy” DeBold and Katherine Matilda Naylor DeBold.

He was married to Jane Louise Cromer DeBold on July 31, 1948, and she preceded him in death in 1997.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, having served during the Battle of the Bulge in the 76th and 90th Infantry divisions. 

He was a 1941 graduate of Thurmont High School.

He retired from Mack Truck Corp. in 1986.

He was a member of UAW Local 171, a life member of VFW Post 695 of Waynesboro, a life member of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 of Hagerstown, life member of Fraternal Order of Eagles of Waynesboro and a past member of Fort Ritchie, Cascade American Legion.

Donnie enjoyed riding his Harley on long trips, and he loved all animals, from horses to cats and dogs.

He is survived by a daughter, Linda C. Trimmer and husband, Paul, of Vera Beach, Fla.; a son, Donald E. DeBold Jr. and wife, Barbara, of Hagerstown; one sister, Betty Gates of Rouzerville, Pa.; grandchildren, Gregory Trimmer, Jeffrey Trimmer, Michael Trimmer, Nicole Trimmer, Kristin Shank, William DeBold and Elizabeth DeBold; 20 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest Wolfe; and two great-grandchildren, Bethany Trimmer and Derek Trimmer.

Services will be held Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, at 1 p.m. at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring. The Rev. Joanne Garver and the Rev. Nick Britton will officiate.

Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown, with military honors by Morris Frock Post 42.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. For the convenience of friends, you may visit the funeral home after noon.

Memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Washington County, 13011 Maugansville Road, Hagerstown MD 21740; to the American Cancer Society, Washington County Unit, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown MD 21742; or to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown MD 21740.
