February 13, 2012

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A suspect in a Feb. 7 armed robbery on Virginia Avenue was apprehended Friday in McKeesport, Pa., Martinsburg Police Department officials said Monday in a news release.

In the release, city police thanked the community for its help in finding Jason Lee Johnson, 21, of no fixed address.

Johnson was found in a house in McKeesport, a community southeast of Pittsburgh, and was being held in Allegheny County, Pa., awaiting court proceedings, the release said.

Johnson was accused of pointing what appeared to be a firearm at a woman in the 400 block of Virginia Avenue and demanding her purse as she was unloading her children from her vehicle just after 11 p.m., police said.

The victim was dragged to the ground as the assailant attempted to steal her purse, which got stuck on her wrist, police said.

The man fled on foot with the victim’s purse and belongings, which later were found with the assistance of a K-9 unit from the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department, according to the release.

Johnson’s jacket, a BB gun, a mask and identification also were found, police said.

A warrant charging Johnson with armed robbery was issued by Berkeley County Magistrate Sandra L. Miller, police said.
