Prudential honors Smithsburg student for volunteer service

February 13, 2012

Felicia Clements, 13, of Smithsburg, was among the Maryland students honored for their volunteer service by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Felicia, an eighth-grader at Middletown (Md.) Middle School, took over her older sister’s “Give a Book” project and has collected more than 4,700 books over the past two years to provide much-needed books to underserved children through the Frederick County (Md.) Head Start program.

Felicia, who was named a finalist for the award, worked with two schools to obtain approval for the book drives. She also promoted the program, and recruited help from her mother and sister to collect and sort the thousands of donated books.

Winners of the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a national program honoring outstanding young volunteers, were Maryland’s top two youth volunteers of 2012:

State honoree, high school — Saanya Ali, 15, of Potomac, Md.

State honoree, middle level — Loranika Sharma, 11, of Waldorf, Md.

The state honorees, along with the top two youth volunteers from every other state and the District of Columbia, each will receive $1,000 and engraved silver medallions, and will be honored from May 5 to 8 in Washington, D.C.
