HAGERSTOWN — Boonsboro’s Abby Duncan and Smithsburg’s Chad Greene had almost identically perfect days at Saturday’s Maryland Class 1A West Indoor Track & Field Championships at the HCC athletic complex.

Duncan led the Warriors girls to a resounding team victory by winning the 55 and 300 dashes and anchoring Boonsboro’s title-winning 4x200 and 4x400 relays. Greene pulled off the exact same 4-for-4 performance for Smithsburg’s boys — though he ran the second leg of the 4x200 and the third leg of the 4x400 — as the Leopards also won a team championship.

* Boonsboro’s girls overpowered the rest of the seven-team field, winning nine of 13 events and scoring 163 points — 75 more than second-place Manchester Valley.

Duncan easily won the 55 (7.49 seconds) and 300 (42.83) and extended the Warriors’ lead in the 4x400 anchor leg (won in 4:24.34), but she had to sweat an official decision in the 4x200.

With Smithsburg well out in front after three legs, Duncan mistimed the start of her anchor leg and had to slow up so her teammate could give her the baton — just before Duncan crossed the line signaling the end of the exchange zone. Duncan then chased down Smithsburg with a sizzling lap of the track, stopping the clock at 1:52.08, but was unsure if it would stand up after a red flag signaling a disqualification was raised.

In the end, Smithsburg was the disqualified team, much to Duncan’s relief.

“As I was running, I saw the blue line and I was kind of scared I was over it,” Duncan said. “I just wanted to track (Smithsburg) down. It was good for me because I had a goal to pursue, so I helped the whole team out.”

Duncan was far from the only standout for Boonsboro. Sarah Zielinski won the 1,600 (5:27.41, a school record) and 3,200 (11:45.65) and was part of the winning 4x800 relay (10:28.22). Meghan Alves won the 500 (1:26.32) and Rachel Doane won the 800 (2:32.80). The Warriors also finished second in four events, with Maggie Sullivan settling for the runner-up spot in the 55 hurdles (8.87) and 300 (43.37).

“We had a scare with the 4x200, but they all came through. I’m very impressed,” Boonsboro coach Becky Walter said. “States is going to be a whole new ballgame. Western Tech looks very good and it’s going to be close.”

* Greene started his afternoon off by defeating top-seed Matt Smith of North Carroll in the boys 300. Greene crossed the line in 37.12 seconds, while Smith — who was recovering from running the opening leg of the 4x800 — was more than a second behind in second place.

“We had three hard practices to prep for this, so I had those in mind,” said Greene, who set a personal record in the 300 for the third straight meet.

He added the 55 title in 6.81 seconds, helped the Leopards’ 4x200 relay take first (1:36.34), then ran a sensational third leg of the 4x400, moving Smithsburg from third place into a lead the Leopards held onto, clocking 3:46.10.

“It’s the hard work he’s done at practice that’s paying off,” Smithsburg coach Ray Shriver said. “He’s a leader who leads by example and makes everyone around him better.”

Smithsburg won five events and scored 133 points — 33 ahead of second-place Boonsboro, which won two events.

Luke Daigneault ran a controlled 3,200, turning up the pace in the final two laps to win in 10:35.91 for the Leopards, who took second in six events. Devon Stover was second in both the 55 hurdles (8.50) and pole vault (11-1).

“There’s some good talent in this area. North Carroll is tough. Boonsboro, Becky does a great job with them,” Shriver said. “We knew (winning) this meet would be tough.”

As expected, Boonsboro’s J.R. Lowery won the shot put by more than 15 feet with a throw of 54-7 1/2. Nick Seabright won the pole vault, clearing 12 feet for the Warriors.
