HAGERSTOWN — The St. Maria Goretti boys basketball team finished with a perfect league record by defeating St. John’s Catholic Prep 70-52 on Friday night in an Independent Parochial School League game at the Gael Center.

The Gaels (17-10, 4-0) will host Saint James at 7 p.m. Monday in the first IPSL championship game.

“I think defensively, in the second half, we were able to come out with a lot of intensity,” Goretti coach Amrit Rayfield said. “We also had a great effort with rebounding the basketball. Those things helped us take control of the game. We made some defensive stops and at times held them to one shot.”

Martin Geben pumped in 26 points to go along with 10 rebounds and four blocked shots for Goretti.

“We picked it up in the second half and we got the win,” Geben said. “I try to be as strong as I can every time I go to the hole. I’m just happy we got the win. We did it as a team. I’m just glad we did everything together.”

Yannick Zanfack scored 10 points and Tyrus Fleetwood had nine points and seven assists for the Gaels. Shae King and Thomas Blake pulled down eight rebounds each and Gavin Rajahpillay grabbed seven .

Nick Peifer scored 24 points and Andrew Rivera got 15 points for St. John’s Catholic Prep (18-10, 2-2).

“Goretti is a good basketball team,” St. John’s Catholic Prep coach Silas Cheung said. “We couldn’t knock the shots down and we also couldn’t rebound in the second half. They were getting some second and third shots. But I was proud of our guys’ effort.”

The Vikings led 34-33 at halftime, but Goretti took control by outscoring St. John’s 17-7 in the third quarter.
