“I was reading today’s paper and I was seeing where someone was saying, from Hagerstown, that President Obama’s much stronger on defense than Bush. Well, that’s a bunch of you-know-what. Let’s start it off here: He pulled out of Iraq too soon, even though we never should have been in Iraq, but we pulled out of there too soon. Now look at the turmoil. Sure, he helped get rid of Gadhafi, so the Muslim Brotherhood could take over that country. ... I’m a retiree from the Army, and I haven’t had a pay raise in two years. This is the first one since he’s been in, so I know the people in the military hadn’t had a pay raise.”

“It is about time that teachers and other government workers should have lower wages and pensions and health care, just as all private industry employees have done. Our paper stated that pension cost has risen rapidly in recent years. I was glad to see a Republican senator said if our county paid some of the pension funds, we would have more fiscal responsibility, not just raise higher and higher, because I would rather see pay cuts and not have layoffs.”

“I’d like to throw out there a very big thank you to a Mr. Mullican from Sharpsburg. He had an excellent letter on the Opinion page of The Herald-Mail, Tuesday, Jan. 31. We need more people like him speaking out, at least, expressing their opinions. And I think this man did an excellent job in just a couple of paragraphs. ... And one more thing: Some of our regular contributing writers to the Sunday paper, I think they need to be replaced, and put the comics back in.”

“I think that Washington County is making a terrible mistake. They have got people to recycle, and now that they’ve got them to do that, now they’re going to stop all the drop-off points, unless you pay an extra ... fee, or curbside, if you happen to be in the proper area, and if you pay an extra fee. I think what’s going to happen is people are going to put their recyclables back in the trash, like they used to do, and will fill up the dump. What are our local officials doing? I think they’re nuts.”
