Mail Call - Feb. 8

February 08, 2012

“I was reading today’s paper and I was seeing where someone was saying, from Hagerstown, that President Obama’s much stronger on defense than Bush. Well, that’s a bunch of you-know-what. Let’s start it off here: He pulled out of Iraq too soon, even though we never should have been in Iraq, but we pulled out of there too soon. Now look at the turmoil. Sure, he helped get rid of Gadhafi, so the Muslim Brotherhood could take over that country. ...  I’m a retiree from the Army, and I haven’t had a pay raise in two years. This is the first one since he’s been in, so I know the people in the military hadn’t had a pay raise.”

“It is about time that teachers and other government workers should have lower wages and pensions and health care, just as all private industry employees have done. Our paper stated that pension cost has risen rapidly in recent years. I was glad to see a Republican senator said if our county paid some of the pension funds, we would have more fiscal responsibility, not just raise higher and higher, because I would rather see pay cuts and not have layoffs.”

“I’d like to throw out there a very big thank you to a Mr. Mullican from Sharpsburg. He had an excellent letter on the Opinion page of The Herald-Mail, Tuesday, Jan. 31. We need more people like him speaking out, at least, expressing their opinions. And I think this man did an excellent job in just a couple of paragraphs. ... And one more thing: Some of our regular contributing writers to the Sunday paper, I think they need to be replaced, and put the comics back in.”

— Hagerstown

“I think that Washington County is making a terrible mistake. They have got people to recycle, and now that they’ve got them to do that, now they’re going to stop all the drop-off points, unless you pay an extra ... fee, or curbside, if you happen to be in the proper area, and if you pay an extra fee. I think what’s going to happen is people are going to put their recyclables back in the trash, like they used to do, and will fill up the dump. What are our local officials doing? I think they’re nuts.”

“I know I’m not the first to suggest this, but I think it has merit. Give D.C. to the State of Maryland. This would give D.C. residents an equal representation in Congress. Give Allegheny and Garrett County to West Virginia. They are more like most of West Virginia. Give Jefferson, Berkeley, and Morgan County back to Virginia, since they are more like the mother state. Possibly include Washington County, Md., in this change to Virginia. I have nothing against West Virginia, and was born and raised here, but it only makes sense to change these boundaries for the reasons stated.”

— Kearneysville, W.Va.

“Every year we get a cold spell about this time, and there are lot of Mail Call submissions basically saying, ‘See? Global warming is a hoax.’ I would like to point out that it was 67 degrees out on Jan 31. I’m just saying.”

— Fairfield, Pa.

“I’ve emailed the county commissioners, and as of now have received no response. So I take this to the taxpayers of Washington County. It’s stated that Homewood would be responsible to repay the bond money. What if they default? We the taxpayers guarantee this money, yes? Can anyone remember the Hagerstown Fiber debacle? Banks have loads of money for borrowers with good credit, at super low rates, why take a chance with the public bond rating?”

— Williamsport

“I wish the people who call in to Mail Call would take the time to do some research before they start mouthing about everything. This Keystone pipeline that’s going ... you’re going to have all the jobs with, don’t just count on that. What they’re, they’re not digging for oil. It’s called tar sand, and it’s very carcinogenic for all along there. So, you know, if you feel like you’d like to, if you feel like you’d rather have cancer, well, you know, go ahead and be around that stuff.”

— Hagerstown

“I would like to request that you please bring back ‘Apartment 3-G,’ ‘Mary Worth’ and ‘Rex Morgan.’ And I do enjoy the horoscopes.”

— Hagerstown
