Boonsboro hires new police officer

February 06, 2012

BOONSBORO — The Boonsboro Town Council unanimously approved the hire of a fourth police officer at its monthly meeting Monday night.

Charles Stanford, who worked for the Boonsboro Police Department before leaving to become police chief in Smithsburg in 2006, was hired Feb. 1, Boonsboro Police Chief Jeff Hewett said.

Stanford, a retired Maryland State Police trooper, was hired at an annual salary of $36,000, Hewett said.

The position was open as a result of the death of former Sgt. Rich Poffenberger in December.

The police department received about 20 resumes for the position, and about one-third of those were from certified police officers, Hewett told the council. Three interviews were conducted before Stanford was chosen, Hewett said.

Stanford’s hiring is contingent upon certification through a police training commission, which is expected to be completed this month, Hewett said.
