SMITHSBURG — The Smithsburg wrestling team took advantage of a short-handed Walkersville squad and cruised to a 66-18 victory Saturday afternoon.

A total of six bouts were contested — all of which ended in pins. Walkersville was forced to forfeit eight matches.

“A win is a win,” said Smithsburg coach Joe Dietrich, whose team improved to 6-10. “(Walkersville) had a lot of open spaces, but we’ll take it.”

The Lions (3-10) took an early 6-0 lead when Ty Tucker pinned Smithsburg’s Saul Hererra in the 285-pound weight class, but three consecutive forfeits by Walkersville gave Smithsburg an 18-6 lead.

“This year has been about the numbers game,” Walkersville coach Andre Jackson said. “When you spot someone 24 or 30 points, it’s tough to win.”

Despite the lopsided score, Walkersville had a decent showing on the mat, splitting the six contested matches with Smithsburg.

Walkersville took the next match as Collin Bowersox pinned Taylor Lampasona at 126.

The contest was put on hold for about 20 minutes after the bout at 132. Smithsburg’s Kian Roberts pinned Tim Holste to pick up the win. However, before the conclusion of the match, Holste landed on his head and was briefly unconscious. He was carted out on a stretcher for safety precautions.

“(Holste) will be all right,” Jackson said. “He said he was just sore, but you don’t want to take any chances with a head injury. We thought it was best to let the professionals take a look at him. It’s better to be safe than sorry.”

After forfeiting two more matches, Walkersville recorded another pin at 152 as Blair Kramer topped Marco Ortega.

Smithsburg then won the final five bouts, three by forfeit and two by fall.

Dalton Condo pinned Walkersville’s Brendon O’Conner at 170, and Smithsburg’s Sam Keyser pinned Kevin Arbecht at 220.

It was a special day for Keyser.

“That was his first varsity win on his birthday, so that was pretty cool for him,” Dietrich said.
