Girls Basketball: McLeod shines through in clutch for Hubs

BOONSBORO — North Hagerstown’s girls basketball team doesn’t need a cloud with a silver lining.

They already have Crystal McLeod.

The Hubs’ sophomore guard provided the needed spark for North by draining a clutch 3-pointer with 54 seconds remaining on Friday to secure an 44-42 MVAL Antietam victory over Boonsboro.

“She’s always got a little spark,” said Hubs coach Cyndi Benjamin. “She’s not always productive, but today she really pushed it.”

North (8-8, 6-5) trailed by seven with 67 seconds left in the third period until McLeod hit a 16-footer to start her own personal 10-4 run against the Warriors.

Shannon O’Brien responded with a 16-footer for Boonsboro (9-9, 6-6), but Erica Kline and Autumn Fisher hit back-to-back 12-footers to give North its first lead since a 10-8 advantage late in the first period.

Ashlyn Hawbaker briefly righted Boonsboro’s ship with a pair of buckets in a 17-second span to give the Warriors a 42-39 edge.

After the Hubs’ Iman Scott hit a free throw, McLeod coolly buried a trey from the right wing to give North the lead for good.

“I’d been waiting the whole game to shoot that 3,” said McLeod. “It was such a relief (when it went in).”

Boonsboro didn’t help itself as it committed nine turnovers and missed all six of its free throws in the decisive fourth quarter.

“We won every quarter except the last one,” said a disappointed Warriors coach Sam Connolly. “We were out of sync tonight. When we ran our sets, we were able to get open looks. But when we didn’t, the shots just didn’t fall.”

After Fisher led North to an early 10-6 lead, Boonsboro took control, using a 14-7 run to claim an 18-14 lead before settling for a 22-18 margin at the half.

The Warriors extended their lead to 32-25 as Scott kept North within striking distance by scoring five of her game-high 14 points in a two-minute span before McLeod took over.
