Alley 5-30 and 5-32 to be renamed 'Lou Scally Alley'

January 31, 2012

The Hagerstown City Council Tuesday night unanimously approved a resolution to rename an alley in honor of local TV and radio personality, Lou Scally.

“Lou Scally Alley,” which was previously Alley 5-30 and 5-32, runs parallel to the 1300 block of Oak Hill Avenue and Hamilton Boulevard between Country Club Road and Magnolia Avenue.

“It’s an honor to Lou Scally and his years of commitment to this community, both on TV and on the radio,” said Mayor Robert Bruchey II, also highlighting his years of volunteer work around Hagerstown.”

City officials surveyed nearby property owners, as well as fire and rescue agencies, none of whom opposed the proposal, according to City Engineer Rodney Tissue.

New street signs will be installed as necessary, Tissue said.

A few years ago, Scally hit the 30-year mark in broadcasting, and the city temporarily renamed an alley behind the WHAG TV station in his honor, Bruchey said.

“Now it’s a good way to make it permanent,” the mayor said. “And he definitely deserves it.”

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is also in the works, city officials said.
