Goretti conducting sports-equipment drive through Feb. 10

January 29, 2012

St. Maria Goretti High School’s Varsity Club will sponsor a sports-equipment drive in celebration of Catholic Schools Week. The theme of this year’s Catholic Schools Week, which runs from today to Feb. 3, is “Faith, Academics and Service.”

The school is reaching out to the local community for donations of used or new sports equipment to benefit local youth organizations in Washington County, including Girls  Inc. and the Boys & Girls Club of Washington County.

The drive will also benefit Goretti’s sister school in Haiti.

David Blenckstone, Goretti’s athletic director, said it is important to help make sports equipment accessible to other youths.

“Sports play such a big role in the lives of many young people in our community, from learning the value of good sportsmanship to staying active and healthy,” Blenckstone said. “Our students are excited to help increase the resources available to these organizations.”

The types of donations needed include youth baseball/softball gloves, soccer balls, baseballs, basketballs, softballs, footballs, lacrosse equipment, youth sports shoes/cleats and youth sports apparel.

Drop-off locations for these donations include Goretti’s main office and the Gael Center (gymnasium). The school is offering free admission to anyone who brings a sports-equipment item with them to the girls basketball teams’ home games on Thursday, Feb. 2, when they play Mercersburg Academy starting at 6 p.m. or to the boys basketball team home game on Friday, Feb. 3, when it takes on Archbishop Spalding High School beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The drive will run through Friday, Feb. 10. Varsity club members are students who have earned varsity letters in athletics during the previous school year and are members of a varsity team during the current school year. St. Maria Goretti High School is a Catholic, coeducational, college preparatory school on Oak Hill Drive in Hagerstown.
