HAGERSTOWN — Six-foot sophomore Yolonda Pinkcett finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Hagerstown Community College women over the College of Southern Maryland 78-41 on Saturday evening in a Maryland JuCo Conference game at the HCC athletic complex.

“I was trying to put up the missed shots,” Pinkcett said. “I am just glad that they are going in. I try to get on the weak side to get the rebounds. Some of our shots weren’t falling. But where we were lacking, we made up in another area.”

Pinkcett averages 10.4 rebounds per game for the Hawks.

“I think our players are responding to what we are trying to get them to do,” HCC coach Marlys Palmer said. “I think that showed tonight with the energy that they had and with the way that they played defense.”

It was the 14th straight win for HCC (19-1, 9-1), which ranks 14th nationally by giving up just 50.1 points per game. Another Hawks victory this morning at 10 against Lord Fairfax will give Palmer her 15th 20-win season at HCC.

“I thought we played as a team really well tonight,” Palmer said. “I thought we did a good job of sharing the basketball.”

Point guard Sunny Flores Conway had 17 points and seven assists for HCC. Ashley Smothers had 11 points and five assists, Akatshi Osongo had 10 points and seven rebounds, Casey Roberts had nine rebounds and five assists, and Katie Sprecher added six rebounds.

The Hawks made 8 of 9 free throws (88 percent).

Southern (2-15, 0-10) used a 7-0 run to take a 9-6 advantage with 14:28 remaining in the first half. HCC responded with a 9-0 run to take the lead for good at 15-9 with 11:06 left in the half.

Southern stayed within striking distance, trailing 23-18 with 5:46 left in the half. But HCC outscored Southern 12-5 over the rest of the half to extend its lead to 35-23 at halftime.

HCC started the second half with a 21-2 run over the first eight minutes to jack the lead up to 56-25. Pinkcett had eight points in the run.

Point guard Morgan Jordan had 13 points and Teshaun Greene added 12 points for Southern Maryland.
