John Robert “Bobby” Vanhoozer Sr., 70, of Sharpsburg, passed from this life on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012, at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown after a long illness and while surrounded by his family and friends.

Born on Aug. 1, 1941, in Tazewell, Va., he was the son of the late Joseph Robert and Lorena Mae (Jones) Vanhoozer.

Bobby was a member of the Rockville Church of God of Prophecy and was most recently attending the Sharpsburg Bible Church in Sharpsburg.

Bobby never met a stranger, he loved life and lived it to the fullest and smiled even though he was in pain.  He loved the Lord and when he was able he would often play his guitar and sing. Heaven is getting a special angel who will be greatly missed. Bobby, we will love you forever.

The Vanhoozer family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Meritus Medical Center for their loving care — it seemed that he adopted every nurse on 4E and 4W into his family. Thank you to all of you for taking such special care of him.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor (Cruey) Vanhoozer; one son, Robbie Vanhoozer and wife, Gail, of Frederick, Md.; his granddaughter, Heather Vanhoozer and her fiancé, Ryan Crummitt, of Frederick; his great-granddaughter, Sarah Mae Crummitt; four sisters, Helen Hagy, of Baltimore, Md., Ruth Hypes and husband, Kenneth, of Burkes Garden, Va., Joan Steele and husband, Buddy, of Knoxville, Md., and Dorothy Jamison and husband, Ralph, of Boonsboro, Md.; and three brothers, the Rev. Billy Vanhoozer and wife, Lily, of Spencer, Tenn., Melvin H. Vanhoozer and wife, Glennis, of Cleveland, Tenn., and Roger Vanhoozer and wife, Kelly, of Charlotte Hall, Md. He is also survived by his favorite pet, Scooby, and many beloved nieces, nephews and good friends.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at the Sharpsburg Bible Church on the corner of Potomac and Antietam Streets in Sharpsburg. The Revs. Gene Renner and Robin Balram will officiate. Final resting place ceremonies will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Sharpsburg.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27, 2012, at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, as well as one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
