The Hykeses celebrate 50 years

Donald and Carolyn Hykes of Greencastle, Pa., celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Dec. 3, 2011, at Grace Bible Church in Greencastle.
The couple were married Dec. 8, 1961, in Trinity United Brethren Church, State Line, Pa., by the Rev. Earl J. Ensminger, who is now deceased.
The celebration included renewal of their vows officiated by Pastor Mac Miller of Needmore, Pa., with their original honor attendants participating. Matron of honor was Nancy (Hafer) Roberts, sister of Mrs. Hykes, and the best man was Walter Hykes, brother of Mr. Hykes. Mrs. Hykes carried her same white Bible and displayed her wedding gown that had been made by her mother, Helen Hafer.
A dinner reception followed with the invocation by George Hafer, the original acolyte. Rosalie Hykes, guest book attendant and Larry Shindle, organist for the original wedding, also attended.
The Hykeses have three sons, Timothy, Mark, who is deceased, and Steve. They also have eight grandchildren, Nathan, Peter, Daniel, who is deceased, Hannah, Matthew, Noah, Sammy and Mary. The grandchildren took part in the celebration.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Hykes are graduates of Greencastle High School. Mr. Hykes served in the U.S. Navy on land and sea from 1956 to 1958. His working career consisted of three years at Frick Co. in Waynesboro, Pa., and 40 years at Mack Trucks Inc., in Hagerstown. Mrs. Hykes spent 50 years as a domestic engineer.
The Hykeses were given a trip to the Smoky Mountains to celebrate their anniversary, where they enjoyed numerous Christmas shows.
