County housing employees raise money for Holly Place

January 25, 2012

Holly Place, a Hagerstown organization that provides housing for senior citizens, received $485 from Housing Authority of Washington County employees.

Melanie Davis, executive director of Holly Place, recently accepted the donation from Richard Willson, housing authority executive director.

Each Friday, housing authority employees contribute $1 each for the privilege of “going casual,” and at the end of the year a vote is taken to determine which charity should receive the year’s collection.

This year, Holly Place was selected because its mission closely aligns with that of the housing authority — to serve the needs of the families in Washington County.

Davis expressed her appreciation for the donation, especially since Holly Place was recently informed that the lease for its downtown storefront, which sells lightly used clothes in support of the organization, would not be renewed.

She said finding a new location for its all-volunteer operation is proving to be difficult.

The housing authority is an independent arm of the Washington County government whose mission is to provide safe, affordable housing solutions that strengthen the Washington County community by focusing on local needs.
