Boys basketball: Goretti rallies for fourth BCL win in five games

HAGERSTOWN — Things looked bleak for the St. Maria Goretti boys basketball team midway through the third quarter of Friday’s Baltimore Catholic League test against visiting Calvert Hall.

The Cardinals had extended a four-point halftime lead to an 11-point advantage at 36-25 with 3:56 left in the third quarter.

But Goretti regrouped and sizzled in the final 12 minutes of play to post a 58-52 victory over Calvert Hall.

The Gaels (12-8, 4-6) have won four of their last five league contests since breaking a 47-game BCL losing streak. It also was Goretti’s first win over Calvert Hall since Jan. 18, 2008, a 55-49 home victory.

“We lost sight of ourselves defensively on switches early, but suddenly we found ourselves in key situations we had to take advantage of,” said Goretti coach Amrit Rayfield.

Martin Geben started the comeback, leading a 7-0 run with two buckets that cut the deficit to 38-35 after three quarters.

Shae King scored at the outset of the fourth quarter, but Calvert responded to take a 44-37 lead.

Calvert then began to suffer turnovers and miss shots and Goretti controlled the backboards.

Geben hit a goal and King hit two goals before Geben came back with a layup off an assist by Tyrus Fleetwood for a 45-44 lead with 3:04 remaining.

From that point, Calvert Hall fouled on most every Goretti possession.

Gavin Rajahpillay took advantage of the foul calls and hit 10 of 11 free throws in the last 1:40.

The biggest play during Rajahpillay’s string of free throws came at the 1:20 mark when he missed the second on a two-shot foul, but King kept the ball alive with a rebound. Rajahpillay was fouled again and hit two free throws for a 51-46 margin.

“KIng had a big game and that rebound was huge,” said Rayfield. “And we put him at the 2-guard spot and he did a great job.”

Fleetwood, who scored Goretti’s first eight points of the game, finished with 14. Rajahpillay had 13, Geben had 12 and King scored 10.

Three players — Denzel Richardson, Wesley Blackwell and Sean Mayberry — scored 11 points for Calvert Hall.

Goretti more than held its own on the glass, holding a 34-19 advantage with Geben pulling down 13.

JV: Calvert Hall 55-47 (G: Nik Steiner 20).
