Hagerstown man surrendered after learning of rape and assault charge

January 20, 2012

CUMBERLAND, Md. — A Hagerstown man has turned himself in to authorities after learning he was facing charges of rape and assault against an 18-year-old woman, Allegany County authorities said Friday.

The Allegany County Grand Jury indicted Bryan Wayne Whitmore, 19, on charges of second-degree rape and second-degree assault stemming from an alleged sexual assault in 2011, according to a news release from the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit.

Whitmore surrendered to authorities Thursday, police said.

On Sept. 11, 2011, Frostburg police responded to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center after being notified by staff members of a possible sexual assault victim, as is required by law.

The victim was able to provide investigators with information about the alleged incident, which took place the night before at a private residence, police said.

Numerous individuals were interviewed during the ensuing investigation, and Whitmore was identified as a possible suspect by forensic evidence developed at the Maryland State Police Crime Lab, police said.

Whitmore appeared before an Allegany County Circuit Court judge and was released after posting $10,000 bond, pending his next court appearance, police said.
