Ex-felon arrested after police found 18 rifles and shotguns at house

A Hagerstown man with prior criminal convictions was arrested after police found 18 rifles and shotguns at his house, the Washington County Sheriff's Office said Thursday.

Kenneth Eugene Butts III, 39, of 14713 Daley Road, was known by police to have prior criminal convictions that prohibited him from possessing handguns, Detective Cpl. Greg Alton said in a news release.

Butts has been charged with 18 counts of possessing a rifle or shotgun with a felony conviction, possessing a firearm with a felony conviction and illegal possession of a regulated firearm, Alton said.

Butts was arrested after police conducted two searches of his home, Alton said.

The first search was conducted Jan. 5 and was related to a burglary investigation being conducted by Pennsylvania State Police in Chambersburg, Alton said.

Besides the 18 rifles and shotguns, police also found a loaded .22-caliber handgun, Alton said.

Investigators with the Hagerstown Police Department and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives assisted in the investigation, Alton said.
