GREENCASTLE, Pa. — Beginning June 1, the Chambersburg (Pa.) Cardinals and Clarissa's Dance Studio will pay a rental fee to meet in the Greencastle-Antrim School District.

At Thursday's Greencastle-Antrim School Board meeting, board members unanimously voted to charge certain organizations for using district facilities.

The former policy was more than 15 years old, Superintendent C. Gregory Hoover said..

"We lose money because we provide electricity," Hoover said. "We are trying to recoup some of the expenses."

School-sponsored student organizations and school-related organizations will not pay a rental fee, Hoover said.

Community nonprofit groups will pay a reduced flat-rate rental fee starting at $15 and outside organizations such as the Cardinals (a semi-pro football team) and Clarissa's will pay a rental fee starting at $25.

Hoover said the cost varies depending on whether the organization chooses a classroom or the library.

Chambersburg and Tuscarora school districts as well as Mercersburg Academy have similar rental policies, he said.

"It's a way to raise money," Hoover said. "I know it's going to hit some of them (organizations) hard because they don't have a lot of money, but to be fair to everybody there has to be this policy."

He said the money would be placed in the general fund to pay for expenses.

The district plans to implement an online software system to assist organizations with scheduling.

The board provided a list of groups that will pay a reduced rental fee. The list includes: youth soccer clinic, Wyldlife/Young Life, Lilian S. Besore Memorial Library programs, junior wrestling, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Greencastle-Antrim Midget Football Association, parade set-up groups, Relay for Life, Greencastle-Antrim Baseball Softball Association, soccer registration, Old Home Week, Dash for Drew, Road Runner Club, Church of God prayer walk, Red Cross blood drives, Rescue Hose Co. Minstrel Show, Rotary Cub spaghetti dinner, Lions Club pancake breakfast, Moss Springs membership meetings, Chamber of Commerce concerts and Healthy Communities Partnership 5K Run.
