Girls Basketball: Defense is all the offense Goretti needs

HAGERSTOWN — Kris Cronise scored 22 points and Severija Narkute added 20 points as St. Maria Goretti rolled to an 82-10 victory over Highland View in a girls basketball game Tuesday night at the Gael Center.

The Gaels (13-4), winners of nine straight, forced the Tartans (0-11) into 62 turnovers — including at least 16 in each of the first three quarters.

“We’ve been working on trying to get our offense into transition, and tonight we were able to do that,” said Goretti assistant coach Mike Murray. “The defense made our offense.”

Murray was filling in for head coach Todd Rideout while he’s out with health issues. Rideout is expected back in about a week.

Goretti scored the game’s first nine points, before Wendy Anyona scored her first of three baskets on the night to get Highland View on the board. The Tartans did not score again until Anyona’s second basket opened the scoring in the second half. In between, the Gaels used a 29-0 run to take a 38-2 halftime lead.

Cronise — who also had six rebounds — made her living by going aggressively to the basket for left-handed layups. Her previous season-high for points in a game was 10, set twice.

“Kris just had a monster game tonight,” Murray said. “She was looking for penetration instead of pulling up and taking 15-foot jumpers.”

Narkute, Goretti’s leading scorer this season at 18.5 points per game, added nine steals and six assists to lead Goretti in both categories.

T.J. Tillman had 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists for the Gaels. Lauree Lorensen had six points, 10 rebounds and four steals, Ama Mitchual had nine points and Maggie Murray added five steals.

“I was very pleased with how we played team basketball,” Murray said. “We were passing the ball and not taking many forced shots. It doesn’t matter who scores as long as we score.”

Anyona had six points and Canetra Salary had the other four points for Highland View.
