Boys Basketball: Wildcats hit stride to ring Liberty's bell

WILLIAMSPORT — After starting the season with just one win in its first eight games, the Williamsport boys basketball team may have finally found its stride.

The Wildcats blew open a close game with a 14-2 run to open the second half, routing Liberty 67-50 for their fourth straight victory on Tuesday in a non-conference contest.

Even though Williamsport lost seven of its first eight, coach Scott Mowbray believes his team is just now beginning to jell.

“I think we found our identity,” he said. “The guys have a better idea of their roles and what they need to do to win.”

After a slow start, Williamsport (5-7) opened things up in the final 90 seconds of the second quarter. Alex Aleshire knocked down a 12-foot jumper and Brandon Jackson drained a 3-pointer, followed by a pair of free throws, to establish a 33-23 margin at the half.

Jackson continued his roll to open the third period with four points in a 14-2 Wildcat run to stretch the lead to 22 with 3:33 left in the quarter.

Many of Williamsport’s points resulted from its ability to find the open man with crisp passes under the hoop for easy buckets, as the Wildcats shot 61 percent for the final three periods.

“We shot the ball well because we got good shots,” said Mowbray. “We got some really good looks tonight.”

Liberty (2-9) found itself in deep trouble at the half with two players in foul trouble, including leading scorer Kyle Farson.

“Fouls are what they are,” said Lions coach Jay Seaborg. “It’s hard to play when our leading scorer has to sit out so much.”

Despite the easy win, Mowbray wasn’t satisfied with his club’s defensive effort.

“We gave up too many second and third shots in the second half,” said Mowbray. “We have to do a better job than that.”

Tyler Wise’s 21 points paced the Wildcats, while Aleshire added 15 and Jackson 13.

Farson and Justin Murphy sparked Liberty with 10 points each.
