Boys Basketball: Rebels' press flattens hopes for 'Roaders

BRUNSWICK, Md. — The South Hagerstown boys basketball team extended its win streak to 10 games and stayed undefeated in the MVAL Antietam Conference on Friday with a 58-39 victory over the Brunswick Railroaders.

Just don’t expect coach Kevin Naylor to rest on his laurels.

“I don’t think about (the streak) at all. I don’t think the team does either,” said Naylor. “I think they have the ‘one game at a time’ mentality. Any team can win on any given night, but if you prepare and play well, you’ll have success.”

The Rebels (10-2, 7-0) set the pace in the first quarter. South went on a 12-point run to break a 5-all tie en route to a 25-12 lead. Michael Hill scored eight of his 12 points in the quarter, on 4-of-5 shooting.

Brunswick (6-6, 4-3), however, fought back in the second quarter, outscoring the Rebels 13-8 to cut the deficit to eight. Tyler Dabbs scored all 10 of his points in the first half. The Railroaders had trouble with turnovers, committing 14 in the half.

It was a problem that continued in the second.

“I thought we battled,” said Brunswick coach Dan McLane. “They jumped out to that lead and forced turnovers. Their size and physicality wore us down I think.”

The third quarter ended in a stalemate as both teams scored seven points to keep the South advantage at eight before the Rebels blew the game open in the fourth quarter.

South outscored the Railroaders 18-7 by using full-court pressure to force five more turnovers. Brunswick was held scoreless in the final period until 2:15 remained.“We’re a team built for speed and that’s what we play with,” Naylor said.

“We’re fortunate to have quick guards and big guys who can move, which allows us to play that way.”

Devonte Morel led South with 17 points and six rebounds and Devon King had 13 points and seven rebounds. Brunswick’s Tyler Shreve led all rebounders with 8.

JV: South, 46-44 (South: Kevin Henson 13; B: Zach Hossler 13).
