About $9,000 worth of copper stolen from Sprint tower site

January 13, 2012

The Washington County Sheriff's Office is looking for whoever stole about $9,000 worth of copper from the Sprint tower site in the 16900 block of Virginia Avenue between Hagerstown and Williamsport.

The thefts were reported between 10:30 and 11 a.m. Tuesday, according to a sheriff's office news release.

Lt. Mark Knight said Friday that the sheriff's office didn't have any suspects.

Thieves also recently took copper from cellphone tower sites in Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania State Police reported Wednesday that someone cut through the fence of the Intelos and Shentel communications site in the 14200 block of Rocking Mill Lane in Antrim Township and stole about 324 feet of copper wire.

Troopers said no arrests have been made in that case.

As the prices of precious metals like copper have risen in recent years, so have thefts across the Tri-State area. Thieves sell the material to scrap-metal dealers.
