January 13, 2012

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A man carrying a small semi-automatic pistol took $750 during a Thursday night robbery at the H-Mart convenience store on New York Avenue near Martinsburg, the Berkeley County (W.Va.) Sheriff’s Office said.

The robbery occurred at about 8:45 p.m., when the robber entered the store at 1501 New York Ave. and told the clerk to get behind the counter, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

As the clerk was walking behind the counter, the owner came from the back of the store and was told by the clerk that the robber wanted money.

Deputies said the owner took $750 from the cash register and gave it to the robber, who then fled the store.

Police said they unsuccessfully tried to track the man with a K-9 unit.

The victims told authorities that the robber was a white male in his late teens to mid-20s. He was about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighed roughly 160 pounds. The man was wearing gloves, sunglasses, a black hoodie and a black backpack with a light interior.

Anyone with information may call the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office at 304-267-7000.
