21-year-old female student seriously injured after being struck by minivan in Shepherdstown, W.Va.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — A Shepherd University student was seriously injured Friday afternoon when she was struck by a minivan on North Duke Street, Shepherdstown Police Chief David Ransom Jr. said.

Kayla Barb, 21, was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., Ransom said.

Barb was crossing North Duke Street on the crosswalk at about 4 p.m. when she was struck by a Pontiac minivan traveling south on Duke Street, Ransom said. Barb had a head injury and other serious injuries, he said.

The driver of the minivan, Bonnie Smallwood of Maryland, was transported to Meritus Medical Center east of Hagerstown, Ransom said.

No charges had been filed Friday evening and the accident remained under investigation, he said.

The Shepherd University Police Department, Harpers Ferry Police Department, Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Shepherdstown Fire and EMS, and Sharpsburg EMS assisted with the incident, Ransom said.
