Wrestling: Confident Hubs top Linganore

HAGERSTOWN — If there’s one thing the North Hagerstown wrestling team exudes, it’s confidence.

Coming off of last weekend’s second-place finish at the Hub Cup, the Hubs throttled the Linganore Lancers 63-12 in Thursday night’s dual meet.

North (9-4) jumped out to an 18-0 lead thanks to two forfeits and Dylan Dopson’s pin at 285 pounds — the first of seven pins by Hubs wrestlers.

Justin Medeiros managed an 11-9 decision at 113 against Collin Edwards for Linganore’s first points, but the Lancers only won two more bouts in the match — one by decision, one by forfeit.

North’s Duncan Yeisley won a 9-7 decision at 120, followed by pins by Brendon Colbert (126) and Gene Balcita (132). Colbert improved to 19-0 for the season.

“The focus in a dual meet is always to score six by pin,” said North senior captain Connor McHose. “Pins win dual meets, and we’re fortunate to have a talented team that can score them.”

The Hubs and Lancers traded forfeits at 138 and 145 to put the score at 39-9, and Chad Ellis earned Linganore’s last victory at 145. North got pins by Michael Leone (160), Kenneth Burrs (170), McHose (182) and Antonio Rosario (195) to end the match. Six of the Hubs’ pins came in the first round.

“(Our wrestlers) are very self-motivated. They want to be good. They want to work hard,” said North coach Greg Slick. “When you have a group of kids that is this motivated, it’s pretty easy to direct them.”

The Hubs showed aggression in Thursday’s meet, taking the points lead in nine of 14 bouts. According to McHose and Slick, it’s a byproduct of their preparation.

“I push my teammates in the practice room and I tell them to never underestimate an opponent. Anyone can win on any given day,” said McHose. “I tell my teammates to keep on pushing and not to peak too early. There’s always room for improvement.”

“When a kid is confident, he can be aggressive,” said Slick. “We have leaders like McHose and Colbert who have that confidence, and they push our team to be better.”
