Q: Recently your column mentioned a new SCORE workshop designed for existing small businesses. Can you give us more details about what, when and where?

A: SCORE is introducing the Simple Steps for Growing Your Business Series. Our goal is to make the business growth process easier and less challenging by offering various ways to get assistance, customized for your needs.

There are four components to the Simple Steps Series. You can participate in any or all aspects of the series, and you can set your own pace, taking part whenever your schedule permits.

The components are:

Free business assessment. Every business has strengths and weaknesses. Once you complete a detailed examination of your business, you'll be able to identify areas for growth and improvement, develop an action plan and find resources to help you take your business to the next level.

Free mentoring. Get help from an experienced SCORE mentor, someone who has been through what you are experiencing now. He or she will work with you, one on one, to develop a customized growth plan for your business.

Free roundtables. Meet and network with like-minded entrepreneurs in our area. Together you can forge relationships, create opportunities and solve common challenges.

Workshops. Learn to transition your business from start-up to growth mode. You'll get information and tips on business fundamentals, key business tools, and marketing and growth strategies. Attend the workshops that will help you the most, based on your assessment results and mentor recommendations.

Upcoming events include:

• Business roundtable on "Marketing for Results" Thursday, Jan. 26, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Bulls & Bears restaurant, 38 S. Potomac St. in Hagerstown.

• Simple Steps workshops on "Strategies for Growth" (Feb. 2); "Marketing for Growth" (Feb. 9); and "Managing for Growth" (Feb. 16) from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hagerstown Community College's Technical Innovation Center, room 323; and free small-business tax seminar (Feb. 23) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at HCC's Technical Innovation Center, room 323.
