Edgar Eugene Smith, 83, of Hagerstown, Md., died Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, at NMS Nursing Home.

Born Nov. 20, 1928, in Washington County, Md., he was the son of the late Herman and Pauline Koons Smith.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953.

He was employed by the Western Maryland Railway for 36 years.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Funkstown.

He was a member of Benevolent Protective Order Elks Lodge 378 and Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.

Edgar was a car enthusiast, and enjoyed classical music, travel and trips with his son to Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Mary Crowell Smith; two stepdaughters, Cathryn Wolski of Chicago, Ill., and Denise Schoen of Smithsburg, Md.; one stepson, Scott Crowell of Frederick, Md.; one brother, Robert Smith of Martinsburg, W.Va.; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Elizabeth Boyd.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Michael A. Louia will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown. Military graveside services will be conducted by Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
