Goretti boys snap 47-game BCL losing skid

January 06, 2012

BALTIMORE — St. Maria Goretti no longer carries its long-standing oh-for in the Baltimore Catholic League boys basketball standings.

On Friday, the Gaels knocked a 47-game BCL losing streak off their shoulders with a 56-50 victory over Mount Carmel.

The Gaels’ last win in BCL competition came on Jan. 18, 2008, in a 55-49 win over Calvert Hall.

“They were so much bigger than us and were a matcup problem,” said Goretti coach Amrit Rayfield. “It wasn’t a pretty game in a small gym, but we did a good job defensively.”

The Gaels (9-6, 1-5) never led by more than eight points, and Mount Carmel (3-8, 0-6) cut the deficit to three midway through the final quarter.

“We hit some free throws and around three minutes I started thinking this was our game,” said Rayfield. “We played well Tuesday at Spalding and had two good practices.”

Gavin Rajahpillay led the Gaels with 15 points and Tyrus Fleetwood and Yannick Zanfack each had 11 points for the Gaels, who will try to pick up a home BCL win Sunday at 2 p.m. against Loyola.

Zanfack, Thomas Blake and Forrest Buterbaugh had five rebounds each for Goretti and Fleetwood also had four assists.
