HAGERSTOWN — A Hagerstown man has been charged in an assault that caused severe head injuries to another man Thursday night on the city’s north end.

Justin Marshall Umstad, 30, of 10932 Bower Ave., was charged with one count each of first-degree assault, second-degree assault and reckless endangerment, according to a Hagerstown Police Department news release.

Umstad was being held Friday at the Washington County Detention Center on $150,000 bond, a Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputy said.

Officers received a report of a possible injured person at about 11 p.m. Thursday to the rear of 66 E. North Ave., police said. When they arrived, officers found a man with serious injuries to his head and face.

The unidentified victim was taken to Meritus Medical Center east of Hagerstown.

Police said they determined after an investigation that Umstad lured the victim out of the back of the residence, beat him, then fled the area.

Officers arrested Umstad near the crime scene and took him to the detention center, the release said.
