Basement fire damages Boonsboro home

BOONSBORO — A fire Wednesday afternoon in a basement of a house at 7411 Mountain Laurel Road caused about $80,000 in damages, according to fire officials.

The fire destroyed the basement and caused heat and smoke damage on the first floor, said Fire Chief Oley Griffith of The First Hose Co. of Boonsboro.

The cause of the 3:05 p.m. fire is still under investigation, Griffith said.

A firefighter suffered a shoulder injury at the fire scene and  was later released from Meritus Medical Center, he said.

Five people lived in the house and it appeared they had another place to stay, Griffith said.

There were several pet rabbits in the house, and one died, he said.
