January 03, 2012

A fire that started News Year's Day in a Halfway townhouse caused $55,000 in damages to the structure and $5,000 in damages to the contents, according to state fire officials.

The blaze started at about 2 p.m. Sunday in the second-floor bedroom of the townhouse at 17420 Maple Leaf Court, according to a news release from the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office.

The cause of the fire, which took 36 firefighters about 25 minutes to bring under control, was being investigated.

A "civilian" suffered small burns to the right hand and arm while attempting to extinguish the fire, but that person refused medical attention, the fire marshal's office said.

The home's smoke detectors were activated, the release said.
