Recently, Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley launched the Maryland Stronger Together Campaign to encourage state residents to give back by volunteering in their communities during November and December.

Washington County Department of Social Services staff learned of a shortage of food and other supplies at the local CASA, or Citizens Assisting and Sheltering the Abused, shelter.

To respond to the need, a food drive was organized from Dec. 16 to 22.

To increase participation in the fundraiser, staff members were able to "purchase" a casual day with a donation of three or more nonperishable food items.

The event culminated Dec. 22 with the delivery of 17 cases (30 cans per case) of canned goods to CASA.

The Washington County Department of Social Services, on North Potomac Street in Hagerstown, is a field office of the Maryland Department of Human Resources.
