MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A Glengary, W.Va., man charged in a Nov. 8 crash on W.Va. 45 that killed a 40-year-old Gerrardstown, W.Va., woman has died.

Rocky Eugene Simmons, 33, died on Christmas Day at his home, according to his obituary.

Berkeley County Prosecuting Attorney Pamela Games-Neely said Thursday that her office received confirmation that Simmons died. Games-Neely said no one else was involved in his death, but she declined to comment on the exact cause.

Simmons was charged with a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence with death, according to court records.

Joyce A. Morris died from injuries she received in the crash, which happened near Hernandez Store near Gerrardstown, according to the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office.

She was a passenger in a vehicle which turned left and into the path of a 1988 Jeep Cherokee that Simmons was driving east on W.Va. 45, according to police and court records.

Simmons failed three field sobriety tests, but passed a preliminary breath test, police have said.

After the crash, Simmons, who had minor injuries, allegedly told police that he uses Suboxone and Lyrica, which are medications prescribed for treatment of heroin addiction and nerve pain, but indicated he did not take the drugs the day of the crash.
