If you won't be among the million revelers in Times Square this New Year's Eve, you can still party like it's 2012.

And you can do it for a good cause.

Unity of Hagerstown will be hosting its first-ever New Year's Eve in Halfway celebration, with proceeds benefiting REACH of Washington County.

The event will be held at the Ramada Plaza on Underpass Way and is open to the public. Doors open at 8:30 p.m.; music starts at 9 p.m.

The featured entertainment will be Sean Collins and the Backbeats, a five-piece band from Howard and Montgomery counties, Md., that plays Motown, soul, R&B and oldies.

In addition to live music, there will be a dance contest, light appetizers, a cash bar and party favors.

As a local ministry, Unity of Hagerstown supports both area and global charities, said Spiritual Leader Sandy Boyer.

"This year, we selected Doctors Without Borders, donating two weekly offerings to the organization, and REACH of Washington County, providing much-needed items," she said.

Boyer said a few years ago, Unity of Hagerstown hosted a hangar dance benefiting the Community Free Clinic "and had so much fun, we knew we wanted to do another dance at some point."

When the planning committee met to discuss organizing a fundraiser for REACH, someone suggested a New Year's Eve dance, Boyer said.

"We thought it was perfect," she said.

Organizers are hoping to raise more than $1,000 through ticket sales.

"It would also be great if another $1,000 was raised from donations at the dance," Boyer added. "We will have a table available for those wishing to contribute. There will be no arm twisting, no lengthy pleas. We just want everyone to have a good time and, if they are moved, to support a good cause."

Lending a hand to others is nothing new to Unity of Hagerstown. In the past, Boyer said members have supported Heifer International, local shelters, the Alzheimer's Association and the Community Free Clinic.

Tickets for the New Year's Eve party are $25 if purchased by Friday, Dec. 30; $30 at the door. Admission includes light food and party favors.

"Dress is anything from casual to evening," Boyer noted, "and we are inviting everyone to wear their own unique party hats."

Boyer said the band, Sean Collins and the Backbeats, "plays the hits that everyone knows and makes you want to get up and dance."

While this is the first year that Unity of Hagerstown has sponsored a New Year's Eve celebration, Boyer is hoping it will become an annual event.

"If the dance is a success, we will definitely hold it again next year," she said.
