Mail Call - Dec. 29

December 28, 2011

“I was surfing the web and saw the video of the Tim Tebow Jesus skit from ‘Saturday Night Live.’ I found it very distasteful and disrespectful. I think, personally, it was a slap in the face to all Christians. It may be even more disturbing to hear people laughing in the background. I wonder, come judgment day, if they will still be laughing.”
— Halfway area

“With the discussion about the senior center and spending money for it, the county already has lots of senior centers, places where old folks and some young folks can come together on a regular basis. They can meet and they can discuss, they have weekly lectures. They often have meals and many other activities. These places are called churches, and in one case, a synagogue. So all people need to do, the seniors, just continue going to the church.”
— Hagerstown

“I’d like to know where the Republicans get away with calling President Obama a socialist president. He is not trying to keep us from voting for who we want as president, but they are. They are trying to tell us that they don’t want him in there, but that it doesn’t matter what the people want. The people are the boss of this country, or supposed to be. So where do they get off trying to tell us who we can and cannot have as president?”
— Falling Waters,W.Va.

“Regarding all the recent articles and comments about parking downtown being a hindrance to stores and shopping, has anyone actually tried driving through the parking lot at the mall this Christmas season? ... You’re better off to walk. ... I’ll take downtown any day.”
— Hagerstown

“I would like to thank the person who took our blow-up Santa Claus out of our driveway. My husband worked very hard setting that up for our granddaughter to enjoy, and now it’s gone. I hope whoever took it is enjoying it, but I think his conscience should make him return. We know who it is, and we are watching.”
— Hagerstown

“I would love to know how many city inspectors there are, and why are they so busy that they need to hire a part-time one in addition?”
— Hagerstown

“The post office has already failed. A dated material’s invitation for a local nonprofit was mailed on Nov. 4, and not delivered until Dec. 9, after the date of the event. This is the second nonprofit known to this caller to experience this type of service. Attempts to trace the missing mail, after calls from members who anticipated its arrival went unanswered, and we are told there is no recourse for a refund on the costs of the mailing. The Baltimore center has been unresponsive to Western Maryland ... there is also concern for the welfare of rural carriers, who must now deliver after dark and in rush-hour traffic.”
— Hagerstown

“Keedysville caller, the unemployment rate officially dropped because over 300,000 people quit looking for work and are no longer counted in the work force. It’s a scam, just like the government’s claim that there’s no inflation, which only someone who never has to buy groceries could believe. And where exactly are all these government employee cuts you heard about? The federal and Maryland governments are still running up deficits and increasing spending, and the Maryland legislature sure didn’t pass and isn’t proposing any of those tax cuts you mentioned. ... Don’t believe everything you hear.”
— Frederick, Md.

“The person in the paper on Dec. 15 from Boonsboro who says deer harvested by hunters are either donated to feed the hungry or used to put meat on the family’s table, obviously, this person never drives along rural roads. On my road alone, there’s six or seven deer carcasses, some of them have just had the horns cut off, some of them have just had some steaks cut out of them, and they’re thrown out along the road and left to lay there. I guess the hungry are supposed to go out and patrol the roads and get their own deer meat or something ... People who do that are making it bad for everybody else.”
— Chewsville

“I see in Thursday’s paper where the county commissioners awarded a contract for $622,000 to replace some culverts. Why do we have all these county employees, and two months ago we had approval to buy new equipment? What’s wrong with this picture? Thought we wasn’t supposed to be spending, overspending.”
— Sharpsburg

“Hagerstown caller, it’s not — repeat, not Congress, that’s building a new aircraft manufacturing plant in South Carolina. It’s the Boeing Corp., and I doubt very much they’d be at all interested in putting it in a high-tax, high-regulation, very business-unfriendly state like Maryland. But why don’t you give their CEO a call? Honestly, it’s just ridiculous how some people call in before even bothering to get such an elementary fact right — and quite puzzling as to why you’d even print such a call.”
— Frederick, Md.

“Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney, two guys that got all their money without working for it. They wouldn’t know what a day’s work is like if it bit them in the rear end. These guys, all they do is go around and make money off of everybody else’s ills. They don’t serve in the military, they don’t do anything useful, and they want to be our president. This is ridiculous. We have to start getting better candidates than what we have out there. I’m tired of these people who never really worked for a living, going out, have no life experience other than ... or making their money through the stock market and books. It’s crazy. We need people who actually know what real work is.”
— Hagerstown

“This is in response to the person calling about the PETA protesters. I am one of those protesters. And the early settlers, they wore animal skins and furs because it was a means of survival, not because it was a cosmetic reason. I also am a licensed social worker, so the people that you speak of us needing to help, I help those people every day.”
