Polar Bear Plunge set for New Year¿s Day

Will 2012 be the year that you brave the icy waters of the Potomac River and become a member of the Polar Bear Club?

The community is invited to join the fun and “get freezin’ for a reason” at the annual Polar Bear Plunge, beginning at noon on New Year’s Day at Williamsport’s River Bottom Park.

Onlookers are also welcome. It’s free to come out and cheer for your favorite participants.

The event is sponsored by the Humane Society of Washington County, Williamsport Polar Bear Club and the Town of Williamsport. Proceeds benefit the humane society.

Athletic boosters to hold bonanza

The Williamsport High School Athletic Boosters bonanza will be held Saturday, Jan. 7, at Williamsport Fire Hall. Doors open at 5 p.m. Dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. with the drawing to follow.

Tickets cost $40 per couple, and include meal, soft drinks and beer.

First drawing and every 10th ticket drawn wins $40; 100th ticket drawn wins $100. One ticket will be raffled and guaranteed in final five for a chance to win $1,200.

A 50/50 drawing will be held to benefit the Kim Piper-Yumlu Fund.

No one younger than 21 will be permitted to attend.

Shepherd’s Table will be closed this week

The Shepherd’s Table at Rehoboth United Methodist Church, 30 E. Salisbury St., serves a free meal each Thursday, sponsored by the Williamsport Ministerium.

The Shepherd’s Table will be closed Thursday. It will reopen Thursday, Jan 5.

Clothes of Hope schedule for January

Clothes of Hope Ministries at Williamsport United Methodist Church, 25 E. Church St., provides gently used and some new clothing.

 It will be open from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7; Monday, Jan. 9; and Thursdays, Jan. 19 and 26. It will be open from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, and Monday, Jan. 23.

There is no charge for clothing. Monetary donations are accepted.

Clean, gently used clothing can be dropped off only during any of the above dates and times.
