Educators, mentors and parents are putting an extra emphasis on literacy skills to help America’s youth beat the odds and graduate. Boys & Girls Clubs of America is no different.

With support from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, the club has teamed up with Developmental Studies Center to implement AfterSchool KidzLit, a reading enrichment program for students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Boys & Girls Club of Washington County is one of 10 organizations across the country selected to receive a $5,500 grant to implement the after-school program for its youth members. The program comes with grade- and age-appropriate books and leader guides.

In December, Unit Director Erin Ruff and Program Director Andrew Presnell from the local Boys & Girls Club, traveled to Atlanta to join representatives from nine other sites for training led by Belinda Passafaro, an instructor for Developmental Studies Center.

“It was a great opportunity to learn first-hand the key components of the program and to share ideas with staff of other clubs who will be implementing AfterSchool KidzLit,” Ruff said. “I’m excited about the difference this program will have on our community because it will help our members realize that reading is fun. It has the potential to make a positive impact on the young people we serve by increasing their appreciation for and enjoyment of high-quality children’s literature.”

The Boys & Girls Club of Washington County serves children at seven locations with units in public housing communities, community centers and schools.
