Pa. man dead after police shootout

December 21, 2011

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — Authorities said a central Pennsylvania man sought after an early-morning domestic incident was found dead after an exchange of gunfire with state police.

Police said troopers were called to a home in Shippensburg in Cumberland County at about 1 a.m. Wednesday. A man involved had left, so they went looking for him and a vehicle at another address.

Police said when they found the vehicle, the suspect inside immediately began firing a rifle, hitting the troopers' vehicle. Three troopers and a corporal returned fire, striking his vehicle several times, and they later found that he was dead. No police were injured.

The Cumberland County coroner's office said 25-year-old Christopher Unger of Southampton Township had one or more gunshot wounds, but their source is unknown.

An autopsy is scheduled for today.
