The bridge at the intersection of Mount Tabor Road and Rush Run Road has reopened after being closed since late August.

The bridge was closed after a chance inspection revealed that the steel beams supporting the deck had been corroded, according to the county's website, www.washco-md.net.

The steel beams and deck of the bridge, west of Hagerstown in the Broadfording area, had to be replaced.

According to a published report in September, closing the bridge potentially saved lives, as it was not scheduled for inspection until 2012. The bridge is on a four-year inspection schedule and was last inspected in 2008. However, a team of engineers taking measurements of another bridge nearby decided to inspect it since they were already in the area, according to the report.

Building Systems, Inc. of Hagerstown was issued an emergency bid of $87,600 from the county in September to work on the project, according to a county commissioners summary on Sept. 13.
