BOYS BASKETBALL

HILTON HEAD, S.C. — Martinsburg not only won the Seahawk Holiday Classic, but head coach Dave Rogers achieved a milestone on Monday.

The Bulldogs (4-0) gunned down Harlan County (Ky.) with torrid shooting, hitting 36 of 63 from the field on the way to an 89-61 victory.

Rogers reached the 600-victory mark as head coach in his 33rd season, all at Martinsburg. He has only 179 losses, and has West Virginia state championships in 1994 and 2009.

As he has in the past, the 60-year-old Rogers spreads credit across the board.

“To the success, having good assistant coaches, good players and staying at one program and being able to to maintain it,” said Rogers. “The best thing I like is the toughness of the schedule and teams we have played over the years and that includes the old Tri-State League in the 1970s and 80s.”

On the basketball floor Monday, Martinsburg was impressive with its shooting as the Bulldogs hit 12 of 21 from 3-point range. Jalen Lewis, who finished with 21 points, hit five 3s and Denzel Cole hit four, finishing with 16 points. Brandon Ashenfelter had 22 points, hitting 10 of 14 from the floor and scoring 18 points in the third quarter when Martinsburg put up 35 points.

Cole had seven assists, six that led to baskets by Ashenfelter, who also had six rebounds. Lewis won tournament MVP honors and had six steals and four assists.
