MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A longtime Bedington Elementary School kindergarten teacher died unexpectedly Friday after a brief illness, Berkeley County Schools Superintendent Manny P. Arvon announced Monday.

Dona S. Ashton, 60, of Martinsburg, taught at the northern Berkeley County school for more than 20 years, Arvon said at the Berkeley County Board of Education meeting.

Members of the school district’s crisis team spent the day at the school Monday, Arvon said.

“Our thoughts and prayers have been with the family,” Arvon said.

Arvon said Ashton took the day off Friday because she didn’t feel well, and was found by her daughter at home.

A 1969 graduate of Martinsburg High School, Ashton graduated from Shepherd University, where she majored in early childhood education, according to her obituary. She was an avid antique car enthusiast, a member of the BCEA, and a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Martinsburg.

Friends will be received Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Rosedale Funeral Home, according to her obituary.
